The Humber College Learning Resource Commons is a 6-storey facility that establishes a sense of place and arrival for campus visitors, staff and students. The visual focal point of the grounds, it orients users and streamlines the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Its design and placement was meticulously considered, ensuring a natural ease of movement for the significant amount of people expected to make their way daily into and through the building. Sustainable design elements were also incorporated to ensure the building’s enhanced performance and longevity.

The ground level features north facing floor-to-ceiling glass with clear views of the lively interior where students display their work gallery-style and reflexively, connects students situated inside to the exterior environment. Understanding that students require different spaces for different needs, the first and second levels feature flexible seating and gathering places for active and quiet activities. A 6-storey atrium carves an open space into the mass of the building, creating a visual connection between all floors and the various programs.

The heart of the building features a dramatic staircase, often used as a central meeting place. From the ground floor, the open stairs wind upwards through the bright atrium. The third and fourth floors accommodate a new campus library and common area, equipped with the latest technology and various types of workspaces. Students have enthusiastically embraced the Commons with its ideal environment – the right mix of vibrant and active spaces, along with formal and quiet areas to champion their success.
