This Opportunity

The Planning and Landscape team at B+H is currently seeking a Senior Urban Designer to join our team in the Toronto office. The successful candidate will be responsible for design and management of a variety of urban design and master planning projects both locally and internationally. They will shape urban design ideas, manage project budget and timeline, and produce deliverables in close collaboration with design principal and project team. They will play a key role in our growing team and should be able to take the initiative to deliver results efficiently.

As a Senior Urban Designer, you will be responsible for:

  • Client relations, consultant coordination, and project management for a variety of Urban Design and master planning projects.
  • The ability to undertake internal and external communication and correspondence.
  • Project organization, scheduling, and budget control.
  • Travel to work assignments outside Toronto; may involve some international travel.
  • Collaborate with other design disciplines within the Toronto office as well as other B+H offices globally.
  • Strategic understanding of global design trends and issues.
  • Participates and oversees the development of design concept direction through deliverable implementation.
  • Report and proposal layout and production.
  • Develop planning concepts, graphics and presentation materials as required.
  • Project Management of large-scale multi-faceted projects as required, collaborating with numerous teams in multiple locations.
  • Creation of hand and computer-generated presentation drawings or computer models.
  • Managing project teams.
  • The ability to structure and facilitate public engagement processes.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Master of Urban Planning / Urban Design or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 10 years of design & project management experience for large scale urban design and planning projects.
  • Must be experienced in local municipal approval processes and requirements.
  • Experience with management and coordination of project stakeholders, and sub-consultants.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong presentation and visualization skills. Ability to narrate ideas through hand/computer graphics and visual storytelling.
  • Strong urban design skills and knowledge of best design practices.
  • Ability to perform in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Excellent proficiency in AutoCAD, Rhino, SketchUp, Adobe Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), ArcGIS, MS Office etc., with an aptitude to learn new digital tools.
  • Knowledge of computational urban design techniques is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Revit is preferred.
